North East Universities are continuing to invest in hi-tech security on campuses to provide safe and secure environments for the rising number of students studying in the region.
North Shields-based security specialist 2020 Vision, has provided CCTV surveillance technology at Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland Universities for the past 10 years. Once again the company has beaten national competition to upgrade security measures at each institution.
CCTV cameras have helped cut crimes committed in University grounds by more than 50% over the past six years. Newcastle University, which currently caters for 18,000 students and 4,600 staff hopes the new measures will reduce crime even further.
Sophie White, Student Welfare Officer at Newcastle University said: “Despite having the population of a small town, Newcastle is already one of the safest Universities in the country, but we can never be too complacent when it comes to student safety. Thanks to the advanced equipment now in place, we are safe in the knowledge that we are doing all we can to ensure the well-being of our students.”
2020 Vision will be responsible for designing, installing and providing maintenance support for three, state of the art digital control centres, each fitted with over 200 cameras. 2020 have also worked with both Northumbria Police and campus police in developing the system.
Peter Houlis, 2020 Vision Managing Director said: “With the current rapid social and economic development in the region, students from across the UK and even internationally are choosing to study in the North East. For the past 10 years we have provided these advanced surveillance channels which reflect our commitment to ensuring secure campus environments to maintain the influx of students.”
