Hoults Yard - Case Study
Hoults Yard is a modern and vibrant office and studio complex, providing clients with a fun and friendly place to work. With over 150 businesses and some 500 professionals on site, Hoults Yard is home to a wealth of talent from the regions creative and digital industries.
Hoults Yard was built for the renowned Tyneside pottery Malings which, at its peak, employed over 2,000 staff. Fred Hoult went on to develop the business by diversifying into letting out serviced office space on flexible terms, alongside a self storage company, Lock-N-Store. His son Charlie Hoult actively took over the business in 2008 and transformed the place into a creative media hub, creating the unique enterprise that is Hoults today.
Spread over 10 acres, Hoults Yard has been growing at a tremendous rate. With over 150 businesses working on site, Hoults Yard has been looking for an integrated security solution that first and foremost protects its tenants, staff and property, whilst also utilising the full array of benefits that 2020 Vision Technology can provide. With so many businesses working on site, it was essential to maintain security for each workspace, whilst also providing 24/7 access.
Having delivered numerous complex security systems to office complexes in the region, whilst also providing the current CCTV system, 2020 Vision was the natural choice for Hoults Yard. 2020 Vision recommended a combination of IP based CCTV and Access Control to provide 24/7 security and peace of mind. By installing a fibre backbone across the entire site, 2020 Vision was able to ensure that Hoults’ security system could scale up as they developed more areas of the site.
Utilising the latest Axis Q6045E PTZ high speed dome cameras, the Hoults management, security and reception teams have access to the IP based camera system across the site in full 1080p definition with 30 day playback of footage. In the event on an incident, any authorised member of the Hoults team can log in to the system from any computer to monitor, playback and download high definition footage.
2020 Vision designed an access control system that was fully integrated with an intruder alarm system. With over 150 businesses and 500 professionals on-site, it was imperative to implement a system that restricts the movement of residents only to their places of work. 2020 Vision were also able to integrate this with Hoults Yards intrusion detection system. A simple double tap of any users smart card on their office door automatically activates the system, alerting security to any break-ins and bringing up images from local cameras in their control room, allowing an immediate response.
The Access control utilises a Mifare proximity reader linked to an integrated locking system. In the event of a user forgetting their smartcard, they can release the doors through the Gallagher control panels located on each floor, or by calling reception. These Mifare proximity readers utilise the latest in wireless technology, eliminating the need for hard-wiring into the door frames. The nature of the locks means that even in the event of a power failure, the doors will remain secure. This wireless solution means that further locks can be added to the system with ease and is helping Hoults initiate a keyless solution across the property. Whilst the outside of the door is electrical, the inside of the door is completely mechanical, meaning that in the unlikely even of a lock failure, tenants can still exit the office with ease.
Hoults Yard provides night time security across its site and takes the protection of its security team very seriously. 2020 Vision took the initiative of developing a system called SmartAccess whereby a security guard can tap any card reader across the building to check-in with the control room. This allows the security team to keep an eye on each other, alerting them if any team member has failed to check-in.
Peter Houlis said: am delighted to continue our relationship with Hoults Yard and I am really impressed with the whole makeover of the development which is truly an innovative business hub for the North East.
Always willing to rise to a challenge, 2020 Vision was able to design a complex network solution that was both flexible and user-friendly, whilst also meeting the businesses security requirements. It was a pleasure to install a modern security solution, into a regenerated historic facility.
“2020 Vision Systems has a long standing association with Hoults Yard, starting nearly twenty years ago when they installed our first CCTV surveillance system. They have consistently met our expectations and respond to any problems with efficiency it’s been a great working relationship. 2020 has been our eyes and ears in security and access control and, touch wood, we’ve been trouble-free since their kit has minded our back. We didn’t blink to get Peter Houlis and his team involved in our latest development allowing us to evolve the systems for the 21st Century and as a platform across the whole site. We feel it’s a trust that cuts both ways and commend them to others.”
