Healthy security at Newcastle NHS Trust hospitals

North East based security specialists, 2020 Vision have secured a major contract to design and implement a new ‘state of the art’ CCTV and Access Control System for Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest hospital groups in the UK.

2020 will begin by installing the CCTV system at the Freeman Hospital. The extensive operation will consist of fitting 105 internal cameras – angled to cover all entrances, exits and stairs, 15 cameras focusing on the external areas of the hospital and car parks, 12 further external cameras covering ‘hot spots’ and finally 7 internal colour domes protecting hospital ‘streets’ and waiting areas.

Recent government figures show that there are currently over 100,000 violent incidents involving NHS staff per year. In a survey commissioned by ITV’s Trevor MacDonald programme it was also revealed that 81% of doctors, nurses and care workers believe that not enough is being done to address the issue with the most common complaint being a lack of security to help prevent attacks.

It is hoped that these new measure being put into place at Newcastle will promote a safe and secure environment for staff, patients and visitors alike. A similar CCTV system is to be extended to the RVI.

The cameras will record all activity 24/7, enabling the provision of post-incident investigative material as and when required. Trained hospital security staff will also monitor from a new purpose built control room with 3 operator stations and a 140 x 70 inches video display wall.

Peter Houlis, Managing Director of 2020 Vision said ” We are delighted to have secured such a prestigious contract. This is something we have been working with the trust on for a number of years. It is very rewarding to see it come to fruition.”

Robin Smith, Estates Consultant for the Trust said, “The replacement of the ageing and disparate equipment is long overdue. The new integrated solution will see our security and safety procedures raised to the highest level, which can only be of benefit to the hospitals and people working and passing through them.”

An Access Control System will also be installed at both hospitals, which will see the existing Trust swipe card system replaced with an innovative new ‘Smart card solution.’ Covering approximately 400 doors, Smart cardsprovide a high level of security, allow staff to enter exit and move around the site. In addition the cards will be used by staff to access PC’s
