Security dynamo called upon by Kiev

North East businessman, Peter Houlis, attends security summit in Eastern Europe as sole Western representative.

Peter, MD of 2020 Vision Systems North East based CCTV specialists, was recently invited as the VIP guest speaker at the inaugural ‘Safe City’ Conference in Kiev.

‘Safe City’ is a key project in Ukraine’s vision for the future and through it cities will be made safer for both citizens and visitors. It marks the culmination of the country’s transition into democracy and a drive to attract tourists following the ending of the visa required by European Union visitors

The conference, organised jointly by Ukrainian technology company Inkom Corporation and native magazine F & S Security, attracted over 300 attendees from Ukraine’s Police Service, Fire Inspection Department, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Emergency Planning, transport and city officials and media.

The aim was to acquaint officials with the importance of planning and developing a clear strategy to maximise the benefits of urban surveillance systems associated with town and city centres, proven to play a major part in all urban regeneration.

Peter said: “I am delighted to have been invited to such an important and interesting event and I am honoured to be the only westerner to be asked to participate.”

Peter made sure attendees achieved a working knowledge of the methodology of designing and planning successful city centre systems and demonstrated key examples of ‘safe city’ schemes in the UK.

He continued, “Although we appreciate the differing political structure, history, laws and lifestyles of the two countries, we are confident that the valuable lessons we have learnt through our experiences within the UK market will help prepare the Ukraine for any ramifications raised by the introduction of public space CCTV.”

Mr. Alexander Kolpakov, director at Inkom Corporation said: “We are pleased that Mr. Peter Houlis agreed to attend and share with us his knowledge and experiences of CCTV projects.

“We have always been impressed with British methodology towards safety and security. His input at the conference will help us avoid some easy mistakes and learn lessons from the UK.”

It is acknowledged that with more CCTV cameras per capita than any other country, the UK currently leads the world in urban surveillance.

2020 Vision has been working with Ukrainian partners since 2003 and began to work closely with leading technology company UKR Invest Consult in 2005. They are now the main advisors on its ‘Safe City’ Kiev project and Peter has even been asked to partake in the project’s implementation task force.

Peter continued “To be invited to join such respected peers from the Ukraine and Russia is testimony to the team at 2020 Vision and their reputation in the UK.”

2020 Vision based in North Shields was established in 1992 and its services include CCTV, remote site monitoring, integrated systems and concierge solutions. It is recognised for its knowledge of developing large-scale city surveillance projects within the UK and Europe and is the only company in the UK that has achieved Level 4 status with the Maxpro Video Management System from Honeywell.
